With a Minnesota winter right around the corner, you’re likely already dreaming of warmer weather and your next fantastic vacation.

We’re here to daydream with you because although we are now closed for the season, it’s never too early to start planning your next trip to Ludlow’s! 

There are a ton of great activities right on the Island, but if you’re feeling adventurous, here are some great off-island excursions for fun-filled day trips that have a little something for everyone.

The Wilderness at Fortune Bay

World-Class Golf

The area has countless great golf courses with some just a short drive away from the Island.

Check out courses like The Wilderness at Fortune Bay with beautiful panoramas of Lake Vermilion or The Legend at Giants Ridge, offering a par 72 course with bent-grass fairways, white sand bunkers, lakes, giant boulders, and towering trees.

Or, try your hand at the unique Wolfridge Golf Course, known for its rugged terrain, challenging play, and reversible layout.

Bring the Kiddos for a Round

The whole family can get in on the fun with a short par 36, 9-hole course at Vermilion Fairways Golf Course. This course is excellent for beginners and all skill levels alike, with pristine wilderness views and burgers, snacks, pizza, and more at the clubhouse.

Pier 77 Mini Golf is perfect for a day out with the kids. Play this Northwoods-themed 18-hole gem and head to the clubhouse after to enjoy soft-serve ice cream, malts, and Sven & Ole’s pizza.

Unique Attractions

Soudan Underground Mine Tour

Our list wouldn’t be complete without including a tour of the Soudan Underground Mine. During the summer, sign up for an unforgettable experience and descend 2,341 feet down a shaft via an 80-year-old electric mine hoist.

Your tour guide will share the history of the mine workings and geological features.

Mailboat Excursions

Explore beautiful Lake Vermilion in one of the most unusual ways and come aboard the mailboat! You’ll see over 80 miles of Lake Vermilion as you ride along on the mailboat.

This unique vehicle delivers mail to island residents six days a week.


World’s Largest Authentic Hockey Stick

Downtown Eveleth, just 50 minutes from Ludlow’s, has been designated “The Capital of American Hockey” and is home to a 107-foot-tall authentic hockey stick. Weighing over three tons this behemoth is complete with a giant rubber puck, making for a great photo opp!  

And while you’re in Eveleth, be sure to stop by the United States Hockey Hall of Fame Museum. This town is truly unique in that no other community of this size has produced as many successful players or has contributed more to the sport of hockey in the states.

Lake Vermilion Cultural Center

The Lake Vermilion Cultural Center showcases several exhibits on the Native American and mining history in the area.

Bois Forte Heritage Center

Located at Fortune Bay Resort Casino, operated by the Bois Forte band of Ojibwe, this award-winning museum has wonderful exhibits that tell the story of this band, whose French name means “strong wood.”

After the museum, you can stick around and play some slots or enjoy an evening show at the casino.

Tower Train & Depot Museum

This historic train depot built in 1915 has been kept near its original condition and offers a look at a steam locomotive, a railway passenger car, a caboose, and a two-room homesteader’s log cabin, along with countless artifacts and photos. 

Animal Encounters

North American Bear Center in Ely

Get up close and as personal as you’ll ever want to get with live bears at the North American Bear Center. Observe bears through windows or an observation deck as they move about a 2-acre forested enclosure.

There’s also an education area with activities, films, and more.

International Wolf Center in Ely

Tour the “Wolves and Humans” exhibit at the International Wolf Center in Ely and then see the real thing in action with the center’s five wolves who call the center their home.

You can also participate in different educational programs and more up-close adventures.

Cook’s Country Connection Petting Farm

Pick up coupons for free buckets of “Critter Feed” at the farm’s front desk and get ready for a day of fun feeding and petting adorable farm animals at the Petting Farm.

Local Events

Cook’s Music in the Park

Wednesday evenings, head to the gazebo in City Park in Cook for their summer series of music in the park. Bring a lawn chair, blanket, and some snacks, and enjoy great live music from local bands.

Cook Area Farmers Market

Every Saturday from 8am–12pm on River Street in Cook, come to the Farmers Market to peruse and shop great local goodies with everything from baked goods, fresh produce, and handmade items from local artisans.

Northwoods Friends of the Arts 

Come celebrate the arts! The gallery at Northwoods Friends of the Arts in Cook displays beautiful artwork by local artists and also hosts a number of fun events that you can partake in, including:

  • Painting Classes
  • Readings
  • Art Openings
